Our Church History

In 2005 Advent Lutheran Church began as a mission church to serve the areas on the west side of Traverse City, in Benzie County. Our church is proud to be in a vibrant area that is home to many cultural attractions including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Advent Lutheran Church began as a mission congregation in the summer of 2005. The Northwest Lower Michigan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) called Pastor Justin Grimm to begin this ministry in the Lake Ann area.

Advent's first worship service took place on December 11th, 2005, in the historic Almira Township Hall. 102 people were in attendance. Worship services continued in the township hall until November of 2006.

After a renovation of the local Lake Ann fire garage, Advent called this humble space home until December 2013. It quickly became necessary to offer two worship services as attendance grew.  Advent Lutheran Church organized officially as an ELCA congregation in May 2007.

On December 24th 2013, Advent was blessed to move into a beautiful new building on Lake Ann Road.  Advent Lutheran Church is a growing and vibrant faith community where all are encouraged to participate in worship, serve in ministries, and grow in faith.
